Hiring Company

Paranaguá Cargo Terminal (TCP)

Eco-economy: Less paper, more efficiency

Significant reduction in the use of printed documents

Total agillity for truckers and TCP

Faster entry, collection, departure for truckers

Faster deliveries in South America

Reduction in delays speeds up deliveries in South America

Fewer calls and Reduced penalties

Drop in support calls and decrease in penalties

TCP had improved its operations but faced significant challenges due to the reliance on printed documents that truck drivers needed to present. Frequent incidents motivated TCP to seek an innovative solution. To address these issues, the company mobilized a team of designers with the goal of developing the MVP of an application that would facilitate the process of entry, container collection, and exit from the terminal for truck drivers.

A bit of history

Challenges Identified

Updating Driver Data

The need to keep driver information up-to-date and accessible.

Unawareness of Terminal Rules

Drivers committing infractions due to a lack of knowledge about the terminal's norms.

Frequent calls to customer service

High volume of calls to customer service with recurring questions.

Communication of Delays or Cancellations

Difficulty for drivers to communicate delays or cancellations to the terminal, resulting in penalties.

Notifications of Cancellation or Delay

Lack of an effective system to notify drivers about cancellations or delays by the terminal, resulting in wasted time or long waits.

Visibility of Trips

Drivers without access to clear information about their upcoming trips or history of completed trips.

Problems with Scheduling Guides

The loss, forgetting, or damage to scheduling guides prevents drivers' access to the terminal, causing operational delays for TCP and penalties for the drivers.

The solution of the Designed MVP

Education and Information

Provide updated information about terminal rules and answers to frequently asked questions to reduce infractions and calls to customer service.

Overview of Trips

Offer drivers a clear view of their scheduled trips and history, improving organization and planning.

Document Digitization

Replace the need for printed documents with a digital version, accessible through the app.

Real-Time Notifications

Implement a notification system to alert drivers about any plan changes, helping to optimize their time and planning.

6 weeks in 3 sprints

As a Lead UX Designer, I played a central role in the strategy and execution of all project tasks, developing a roadmap with objectives, tasks, deadlines, and deliverables, in order to maintain clear and effective communication with both stakeholders and the team.

Discovery

Understand the technical availability and how to adapt the user journey flow

The first material we received was about the current journeys at the Container Terminal. It included some business rules, and we had to map out the journey flow.

We conducted interviews with drivers to understand their affinity with technology and a bit about their daily routine with the Terminal.

  • Must be accessible on iOS and Android smartphones of various sizes

  • Should not occupy too much space on the smartphone

  • High ease of use

  • Should also allow for offline use

Insights

Criation of the journey with the Truck Driver App

We conducted an exploratory interview with the PM from TCP, validating our Certainties, Doubts, and Assumptions. We also took the opportunity to create the new journey using the Truck Driver app.

The journey was approved both by the PM in terms of business rules and by the development team in terms of technical availability.

Understanding the needs of the users and TCP, we proposed the development of a Progressive Web Application (PWA). This modern approach combines the accessibility of a website with the functionality of a native app, representing the ideal solution to meet the expectations of both users and TCP.

Ideation
Technological Solution in PWA
  • It eliminates the need for downloading, allowing immediate use of the application.

  • Universal compatibility with Android and iOS devices.

  • Possibility to add icons directly to the smartphone's home screen.

  • Support for sending and receiving push notifications, keeping users always informed.

  • Effective operation on low-speed networks and the ability to operate offline, ensuring the continuity of processes without interruptions.

  • Automatic updates, ensuring that users always have access to the latest features and security improvements.

  • Access to advanced smartphone features, including camera, geolocation, and photo gallery, enriching the user experience.

Wireflows

User tests

We conducted 8 remote quantitative interviews with potential users of the Truck Driver App to validate its usability in the registration and scheduling journeys.

Results

All 8 testers were able to complete the registration and scheduling/visit to TCP journeys without facing significant frictions, considering the process easy and intuitive. This indicates high usability in the tested functionalities of the app.

Insights
  • Structure a space to inform and justify delays in cases of unforeseen events;

  • Implement a vehicle speed indicator for when passing through the scanner;

  • Allow the driver to correct the container's plate;

  • Allow the driver to approve or disapprove the trip, to prevent carriers from holding the window with the CPF;

  • Use WhatsApp as the main means of receiving demands.

Truck Drivers' Comments

"The part I liked the most is eliminating paper and having control of entry and exit from inside the truck."

Josias, 42

"I liked it! I would do all the scheduling procedures from here. I wouldn't have to use paper or take the exit slip to the carrier."

Mariano, 37

"The solution is going to be very helpful. It makes it much easier not having to worry about the papers."

Marcelo, 35

Documenttion in Figma

In partnership with the UI Designer, we gathered and delivered all the necessary technical documentation for the development team. As the team representative, I was responsible for leading the final presentation of the project to the stakeholders, emphasizing the progress and lessons learned.

The complete documentation, including user journeys, detailed instructions, and exception scenarios, was prepared in Figma. We also included the style guide, detailing the specifications for colors, typographies, grids, and components, both basic and advanced, providing clear guidelines for the engineering team to follow.

Conclusion and Learnings

As the Lead UX, concluding the TCP project in 6 weeks was a milestone that reinforced sustainability and efficiency, overcoming challenges with the support of the UI Designers and TCP's PM. This experience highlighted the importance of adaptability, collaboration, and innovation, enriching the organizational culture and promoting social responsibility, reaffirming my commitment to excellence.
